Database Bad Practices by Niall Litchfield * DBA bad practices : - No catalog, configuration db : what are the versions, servers, passwords, accounts, patch levels of my dbs? who uses them? how big they are? ITIL - Email abuse, excessive email alerts, when to be notified, have a dashboard, be sensitive with your KPIs for filters - No Audit, they want you to audit everything and keep them forever :) - Tuning and capacity management without data collection - No version control * Developer bad practices : - Persistance layer, java developer style, db is a blackbox here - procedure over sets, commit in loops - re-invent the wheel - javaoc/pldoc, can not customize all documentation - trust the client :) * Management bad practices : - single dba, security-knowledge-stress risk - combining dba and developer roles with other roles - no budget for training - Oracle is different than others, not just any db, technical skills are important - let dba meet business people and understand the bussines he is a part of
